Brehon API Terms of Service
Last updated: March 17, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the Brehon API, documentation, website and related services (collectively, the "API" or "Service").
By accessing or using the API, you agree to these Terms. If you use the API on behalf of a company or organisation, you confirm that you have authority to bind that entity to these Terms.
If you do not agree, you must not use the API.
1. The Service
Brehon provides structured regulatory and privacy law data derived from public domain materials. The API enables developers and organisations to query and integrate that data into applications and workflows.
The underlying laws and regulations are public domain. However, Brehon's structured formatting, metadata, tagging, classification, normalisation, taxonomy, API design, documentation, infrastructure and branding are proprietary and protected by intellectual property law.
2. No Legal Advice
The API and all data returned are provided for informational purposes only.
Brehon does not provide legal advice. API outputs do not constitute legal opinions, certified analysis or official government guidance. You are solely responsible for obtaining appropriate professional legal advice for compliance or regulatory decisions.
If you use the API in legal or compliance workflows, you remain responsible for ensuring appropriate human review and professional oversight.
3. Licence Grant
Subject to these Terms, Brehon grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the API to:
- Develop applications that interact with the API
- Use API outputs within your internal tools, products and workflows
You must not:
- Resell, sublicense or provide the API itself as a standalone service
- Systematically download, replicate or aggregate API outputs to create a substantially similar or competing regulatory database or API service
- Reverse engineer or attempt to extract source code or underlying systems
- Circumvent rate limits, authentication or security controls
- Use the API in breach of applicable law.
All rights not expressly granted are reserved by Brehon.
4. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
- Abuse, overload or disrupt the Service
- Attempt to bypass access controls or security mechanisms
- Use the API to provide fully automated legal advice without meaningful human review
- Misrepresent API outputs as official, certified or government-endorsed
- Use the API in a way that infringes intellectual property or other legal rights.
We may suspend or revoke access where we reasonably believe you have breached these Terms or created legal, operational or security risk.
5. API Keys
API keys are confidential credentials issued to you.
You must:
- Keep your API key secure
- Not share it publicly
- Not embed it in client-side code
- Ensure separate projects or users use separate keys.
Each account may hold a maximum of 3 active API keys at any time. We may revoke or disable keys that exceed this limit.
You are responsible for all activity carried out using your API key.
We may revoke keys that are misused or exposed.
6. Data Accuracy and Availability
Laws and regulations change frequently. While Brehon takes reasonable care to maintain accuracy and currency, we do not guarantee that data is complete, current or error-free.
You are responsible for independently verifying information before relying on it.
The API is provided on a best-effort basis. We do not guarantee uptime, availability or uninterrupted access. We may modify, suspend or discontinue the Service at any time.
7. Fees and Future Pricing
The API may currently be offered free of charge.
Brehon reserves the right to introduce subscription plans, usage-based pricing, enterprise tiers or other fees in the future. We will provide reasonable notice before implementing material pricing changes.
Continued use of the API after such notice constitutes acceptance of applicable fees.
Unless otherwise stated, fees are non-refundable.
8. Intellectual Property
As between you and Brehon:
- Brehon owns all right, title and interest in the API, including its structure, formatting, database schema, metadata, documentation, branding and infrastructure.
- You retain ownership of your applications and your original content.
If you provide suggestions, feedback or ideas regarding the API, you grant Brehon a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use and incorporate that feedback without restriction or compensation.
9. Confidential Information
You must not disclose non-public technical documentation, security information or API credentials.
Where non-public information is shared in connection with paid or enterprise arrangements, each party agrees to use reasonable care to protect it from unauthorised disclosure.
10. Disclaimer
The API is provided "as is" and "as available".
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Brehon disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement, accuracy and availability.
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.
11. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law:
Brehon will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, including loss of profits, revenue, data or business opportunity.
Brehon's total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to the API will not exceed:
- (a) if you use a free tier: £100 (or local currency equivalent); or
- (b) if you use a paid plan: the total fees paid by you in the twelve (12) months preceding the event giving rise to the claim.
Nothing in this section limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited.
12. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Brehon and its affiliates from claims, losses, damages or expenses arising out of:
- Your use of the API
- Your breach of these Terms
- Applications or services you build using the API
- Your breach of applicable law.
13. Termination
You may stop using the API at any time.
We may suspend or terminate access where:
- You breach these Terms
- Your use creates legal, regulatory or security risk
- We discontinue the Service.
Upon termination, your licence to use the API ends immediately.
Sections relating to intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability and indemnity survive termination.
14. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.
The courts of England and Wales shall have exclusive jurisdiction, except where mandatory local consumer protection laws require otherwise.
15. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time.
Where changes are material, we will provide notice via the email associated with your API key or through the website.
Continued use of the API after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
